Drapery Type, Rare Grade, Silver Gray, Light Clean. Consignor Price Reduction - The 1840 Drapery date is recognized as being quite challenging in AU and downright rare in Mint State. A long time client is releasing this AU Details example with a complete strike. Residual luster is evident under a bright light though the surfaces exhibit light hairlines from an old clean. A great filler opportunity until a choice original example can be located. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.1 (2020-2025) holder.

R7
Original $1350 Rim Cuds at 10:00 and 4:00, Very Rare Die State, Web-Book Plate Coin, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. 1842 F-103b is the R7 die state whereby two obverse cuds at found at 11:00 and 4:00. The single 1842 cud obverse die state (F-103a) is listed in the Top 100 Variety set and available with some searching. The double obverse cud F-103b die state was mentioned by Greer as existing and being rare. I subsequently located an example at the ANR November 30, 2004 Frog Run Sale and was added to the Seated dime die variety online reference after its August 2004 release. This plate coin is one of the few F-103b examples known as I have only seen two examples of the doubled cud obverse die state outside of the plate coin, both are listed in the GFRC Sales Archive with the finest graded PCGS MS64+ CAC. A near choice example with some left obverse rim chatter precluding a full Choice quality rating. When pursuing an R7 die state, one can't be too stringent on perfection. I've thoroughly enjoyed owning this example. It ships in a 2x2 cardboard holder with Fortin notes.

F-102a
Original $265 Medium O, Shattered Reverse #2, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. A crusty original 1842-O F-102a example that was purchased during November 2002 during the Liberty Seated dime die variety research period. Greer had listed this reverse, with its massive die cracks, as Shattered Reverse #2 in his DLRC Press guidebook. Fortin took the liberty of adding this variety to his Top 100 Varieties listing as #22. Even wear is noted on both sides with the reverse devices being notably weak as hubbed. There is an ancient and fully toned over line on the left side of the upper shield extending into the center motif while the reverse is problem free. I've assigned an GFRC-Original quality rating due to the obverse line. This dime ships in its original cardboard 2x2 dating to 2002.

F-102b
Original $365 Medium O, Shattered Reverse #2, Terminal Die State, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. The F-102b reverse die state is most likely the terminal die state based on years of personal and community research. There is a massive die crack from rim above ST(A)TES and across through STA(TES O)F. Note that (O)F is partial obscured by the broken die. The die crack through tops of UNIT(ED) is well pronounced. This example was purchased directly from Greer during May 1995 and ships in its original cardboard 2x2. Both sides are toned a light gray with hints of rose on the obverse. The shattered reverse die cracks are readily evident on this lot. Within the Liberty Seated dime online reference, my F-102b image is that of a piece from Dr. Tim Cook where the die crack across (O)F is complete while on this example, the internal die cud has yet to form. Few examples of this late die state are known.

Choice $1100 Little Orphan Annie Date, Choice Original, Tenafly Collection. Final Consignor Price Reduction! - CAC approved 1844 dimes aka. The Little Orphan Annie, infrequently appear on the GFRC price list with CAC approval. This Tenafly Collection example is a special piece with choice surfaces covered by a multi-colored skin that includes rose, orange, gold, green and gray shades. The older holder is well worn with plastic scratches across the front side. Images capture a portion of the holder lines. The CAC price guide indicates $1150 as fair market value, but researching the Sales Archive may reveal this number to be too conservative based on prior GFRC sales. Housed in Gen 4.5 (2011-2013) holder with CAC Approval. PCGS #4585.

F-102
Choice $185 Reverse of 1844 (B), Web-Book Plate Coin, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. Offered here is the 1845 F-102 plate coin within The Definitive Resource for Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors online reference with updated photography. The F-102 obverse die has die chips around Stars 3, 4, 5 and 6 and is paired with a late die state example of 1844 Reverse B when used again in 1845. The key diagnostic for identifying the left over 1844 reverse die is a die crack from the rim down through S(T)ATES into the wreath. This conservatively graded example is fully choice with golden-rose toning that is a bit more enhanced at the borders. This lot ships in its original cardboard 2x2 and dates back to a January 1997 purchase.

Weak Stars 1 Through 6, Web-Book Plate Coin, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. The F-111 obverse, while exhibiting severe weakness, is paired with a heavily cracked reverse die. The origins of this heavily cracked reverse went undefined for decades until an interim die state reverse specimen appeared within GFRC inventory in late 2016. The interim die state of Reverse F, listed as F.2 (F-108a), was discovered on an NGC MS63 example with matching die cracks to those of the above late die state example but much fainter. During the interim die state The F-108a reverse is paired with Obverse 6. The F-111 pairing of Obverse 8 and Reverse F.3 was described in a 1984 issue of the Gobrecht Journal by John McCloskey from a Seated dime made available by Bill Carpenter. This web-book plate coin was purchased March 1992 and ships in its original 2x2 cardboard holder.

Die Cracks Above Liberty's Foot, Large O, Slight Oblique Punch, Web-Book Plate Coin, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. The die cracks on the F-107 and F-107 obverses, between Liberty's foot and Star 13, are similar. Careful study of the position of the diagonal die crack with respect to Liberty's foot is recommended. The additional diagnostic to differentiate the F-107 and F-107 obverses is the strength of the date punch. The F-107 obverse features a strong date with the 54 digits being closed and the left foot of the 1 digit being complete. The F-106 obverse, on the other hand, has a weak date hubbing. The F-107 reverse exhibits a Large O mintmark that appears to be slightly oblique. The upper section of the Large O mintmark is stronger in appearance than the bottom section. This lot is the plate coin at the Liberty Seated Dime die variety reference and was purchased August 1992, the early period of Fortin's die variety research. It ships in its original 2x2 cardboard holder from that era.

Choice $150 Small Date, Choice Original Gray, Reverse Planchet Flaw, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. This offering is a choice original 1856 Small Date F-105 dime which is the lapped obverse die state of the F-111 die pairing where the repunched 18 digits are easily noted. I could not believe that PCGS assigned a details opinion for a perfect original Seated dime with a reverse planchet flaw as struck. The planchet flaw runs through both E's in the denomination and up to (O)F. Priced at AU50 CDN bid towards locating a new home. This is assuredly a conversation piece. Housed in PCGS Gem 5.0 (2015) holder. The label reads Genuine Planchet Flaw - AU Details
